Every backpack here is handmade — a handcrafted leather backpack in the literal sense, cut and stitched by artisans in Florentine workshops rather than pressed out on a line. That is what you are paying for, and it is why no two vintage-finish hides come out identical.

Handmade does not mean slow to arrive. Stock ships from Florence within 24 hours and reaches the US in three to six days.

Made in Florence, not just Italian leather

There is a difference between the two claims and it is worth knowing. "Italian leather" describes where the hide was tanned. "Made in Italy" describes where the bag was assembled — and under EU origin rules that can be true when only the last substantial process happened here.

Every backpack on this page is both: hides from Tuscan tanneries, cut and stitched on benches in Florence. We work directly with those workshops, which is why the prices sit well below what the same construction costs through an importer, a distributor and a boutique.

What separates a good leather backpack from a cheap one

Weight before you fill it. Real hide is heavy. A leather backpack starts around 800g empty. Anything suspiciously light for its size is thin split leather over a stiffener.

Strap width. Narrow straps cut in once the bag is loaded. Anything carried daily wants straps of at least 3cm, wider on a larger bag.

Where the straps join the body. That seam carries the entire weight and is the first thing to fail on a poorly made bag. Look for reinforcement or a riveted anchor rather than a single line of stitching.

The grade, named specifically. Full-grain or top-grain, stated on the page. "Genuine leather" is a grade below both and tells you less than it appears to.

Sizes are published, because "medium" is not a standard
