What Is Leather Made Of?

Leather is animal hide or skin preserved by tanning. The material doing the work is collagen — a fibrous protein that makes up most of the dermis in any mammal skin. Tanning cross-links those collagen fibres so they stop decaying and become permanently flexible. That is the whole of it: a protein network, stabilised.

Most leather is cowhide. Goat, sheep, pig and buffalo are also common, and each behaves differently because their collagen is arranged differently.

The collagen part, briefly

Skin has three layers. The middle one, the dermis, is roughly 70% collagen by dry weight, and it is the only layer that becomes leather — the hair-bearing outer layer and the fatty inner layer are both removed.

Collagen fibres in the dermis are woven in three dimensions, and crucially they are densest near the outer surface and looser toward the flesh side. This single fact explains the entire leather grading system. Keep the dense outer surface and you have full-grain. Sand it off and you have top-grain. Split it away and use what is left and you have the material sold as "genuine leather". We cover that hierarchy in detail in full-grain versus top-grain leather.

How leather is made

  1. Curing and soaking. Raw hides are salted or chilled to stop bacterial decay, then rehydrated.
  2. Liming and fleshing. Hair, epidermis and subcutaneous fat are removed, leaving the bare dermis — at this stage called a pelt.
  3. Tanning. The step that makes it leather. Tannins or chromium salts bond to the collagen and cross-link it, so it will no longer rot or stiffen irreversibly when wet.
  4. Retanning, dyeing and fatliquoring. Colour goes in, and oils are worked through the fibre structure to set how soft the finished leather is.
  5. Drying and staking. The hide is dried under tension and mechanically worked to loosen the fibres again.
  6. Finishing. Surface treatment — anything from a light wax on full-grain to a thick pigmented polymer on corrected grain.

A vegetable-tanned hide spends weeks in pits. A chrome-tanned hide spends hours in a drum. That difference is most of why one costs several times the other.

Italian vegetable tanning is concentrated in Santa Croce sull'Arno, a district about 40km west of Florence that accounts for a large share of the world's vegetable-tanned leather. Tanning method and grade are independent variables — you can have vegetable-tanned split leather and chrome-tanned full-grain — so ask about both if it matters.

Two meanings of "genuine leather"

This phrase causes more confusion than any other in the category, because it means two different things depending on who is speaking.

Colloquially, people say "genuine leather" to mean real hide rather than plastic. That usage is fine and it is how most shoppers use it.

In trade usage, "genuine leather" is a specific grade — the third tier, below full-grain and top-grain. It generally means split leather: the fibrous inner layers left over after the good outer surface has been split away, with a grain pattern printed on and sealed under polymer.

The consequence is practical. A label reading "genuine leather" tells you the material is hide-derived, and simultaneously hints that it is not from the best part of the hide — because a maker using full-grain says so.

The same trap applies to the Italian phrase vera pelle, which simply translates as "real leather" and is stamped on every grade including bonded. It is not a certification and nobody audits it. We wrote a whole piece on why that stamp tells you nothing.

What PU, faux and bonded are made of

PU leather is a polyurethane film on a woven or non-woven fabric backing, embossed with a grain pattern. It contains no hide. See our full guide to PU leather.

Faux leather is an umbrella term for anything imitating leather — usually PU or PVC. "Vegan leather" is the same category under a different name; around 90% of products sold that way are plastic.

Bonded leather is the confusing one. Leather dust and offcuts are ground up, mixed with adhesive and pressed onto a fabric carrier, then given a printed grain. Leather content is typically 10–20% by weight. It can legally be called leather in most markets, and it is leather roughly the way chipboard is wood.

Frequently asked questions

Is leather made from cow skin?

Most of it. Cowhide dominates because cattle are farmed at scale for meat and the hide is a byproduct. Sheep, goat, pig and buffalo hides are also widely used.

What is leather made of chemically?

Collagen protein, cross-linked by a tanning agent — plant tannins or chromium salts. Finished leather also carries dyes, oils and a surface coating whose thickness varies enormously by grade.

Does real leather contain plastic?

The hide itself does not. But most commercial leather carries a polymer surface finish, and lower grades carry a thick one — split leather sold as "genuine leather" has its grain printed into a polymer layer. So "no plastic at all" is only true of lightly finished full-grain.

What part of the animal becomes leather?

Is leather a byproduct or a driver of livestock farming?

A byproduct. Hide is a small fraction of an animal's commercial value, so leather demand does not meaningfully determine how many cattle are farmed. The environmental questions worth asking are about tanning — effluent treatment, water use, chromium handling — which is what Leather Working Group certification audits.

Why is Italian leather considered better?

Two concrete reasons rather than mystique: the Tuscan tanneries select hides tightly, rejecting more of each batch than volume producers do; and the vegetable-tanning tradition at Santa Croce sull'Arno produces a firmer leather that ages better than fast chrome-tanned stock. Neither is magic, and neither is guaranteed by a "Made in Italy" label on its own.

How long does real leather last?

It depends entirely on grade. Full-grain lasts decades with care. Top-grain runs 5–15 years. Split leather sold as "genuine leather" typically fails within 1–3 years as its coating cracks, and bonded leather in under two.
